• 25–50 ton cranes — the workhorses for industrial machinery, steel structural elements, transformer installation, and mid-weight plant equipment. If you're moving a CNC machine or installing a generator, this is typically the right range.
• 80–120 ton cranes — heavy industrial applications: large transformers, pre-fabricated building modules, vessel lifts at the harbour, and mining equipment. These cranes require a proper ground assessment before deployment.
• 200–500 ton heavy-lift cranes — major lifts for power stations, refineries, wind farm components, and large marine vessels. Project-based pricing. These require detailed engineering and typically 3–5 days mobilisation.

How the crane hire process works

From first call to crane on site, here's what happens:

1. You tell us about the job — what you're lifting, how much it weighs, how high it needs to go, and where the site is. Email, phone, or use our quote form.
2. We recommend a crane and quote a price — within 48 hours, usually faster. The quote is fixed: no hidden extras.
3. Site assessment (if needed) — for complex lifts, we visit the site to check ground conditions, access routes, overhead obstructions, and the best crane position. Free of charge.
4. Lift plan — we prepare a rigging plan covering crane setup, load attachment, lift path, and safety exclusion zones. Required under the OHS Act for lifts over a certain threshold.
5. Crane on site — our operator arrives, sets up, and executes the lift safely. You get documentation for your compliance records.

Do I need a permit for crane operations in South Africa?

If the crane needs to operate on or obstruct a public road, you'll need a temporary road closure permit from the relevant local municipality. BrightRig handles the permit application as part of the project planning — it typically takes 5–10 working days.

For operations on private property, no municipal permit is required. However, a lift plan must be prepared in compliance with the Driven Machinery Regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. We include this as standard on every project.
